Medicare Part D…Reducing Your Prescription Drug Costs

Medicare offers prescription drug coverage (Part D) for anyone with Medicare Part A or Part B. Medicare Part D plans cover a wide variety of drugs, including generics, brand names and specialty drugs.

The best time to purchase a Medicare Part D policy is when you are first eligible for Medicare. You can join during the seven-month period that begins three months before the month you turn 65, and ends three months after the month you turn 65. Even if you do not take a lot of prescriptions at that time, it is important to consider joining, as you will likely pay a late enrollment penalty.

Most Medicare Part D plans have a monthly premium, a yearly deductible, and copayments or coinsurance. All plans have a coverage gap (the “donut hole”) which is when you have to pay 100% of the cost of your drugs. When you meet with your Senior Embrace advisor, he or she can explain this in greater detail.
